Item price, the shipping the buyer paid and the sales tax on the order. eBay charges its final value fee on all three, not just the item price — that catches a lot of sellers out.

What percentage does eBay take from a sale in 2026?
For private sellers in the US, most categories pay a final value fee of 13.6% of the total amount of the sale up to $7,500 per item, plus 2.35% on the portion above that, and a fixed per-order fee of $0.30 (orders of $10 or less) or $0.40. eBay Store subscribers pay a reduced headline rate of 12.7% up to $2,500 in most categories, and much lower rates in others — 9.35% for phones and electronics, 7.35% for computers.
Does eBay charge fees on shipping and sales tax?
Yes. The final value fee is a percentage of the total amount of the sale, which eBay defines as the item price plus shipping, sales tax and other applicable fees. A buyer-paid $8 shipping charge on a $40 item is charged at the same rate as the item itself, which is why many sellers charge “free shipping” and build the cost into the price.
How much does it cost to list an item on eBay?
Listing is free for most sellers: private sellers get 250 zero-insertion-fee listings a month, and Store subscriptions include from 1,000 fixed-price listings up to 100,000 depending on the tier. Beyond the quota, each listing costs $0.35. Optional upgrades like subtitles or reserve prices carry their own fees whether or not the item sells.
Is there an eBay fee if my item doesn’t sell?
With no insertion fee and no listing upgrades, an unsold item costs nothing — the final value fee is only charged when the item sells. Promoted Listings fees also only apply when a sale is attributed to the ad.
What is the difference between eBay payout and profit?
Payout is the order total minus eBay’s fees — the money that lands in your account. Profit is payout minus what the item cost you and what you actually paid to post it. A $50 sale with $14 of fees and $25 of costs pays out $36 but only earns $11, which is the number this calculator surfaces.
